Read to your toddler. Teach your toddler to love books and reading. Allow the toddler to look at the pictures, turn pages, and retell the story. Ask questions about the story and pictures.

My Mama Bought Me A Llama

One morning as I awoke,
I felt a very sharp poke.
It was my sister
with her pointed toy twister.
She said, "Come eat.
Mama has a treat."
I went to the breakfast table
and began to read the cereal box label.
Mama came in
with a big grin
carrying strawberries in a crate.
I filled up my plate
and ate and ate.
As I sat in my pajamas
I asked my mama,
"May I have a pet?"
I said, "I know a fine vet."
I wanted a big dog
or a little green frog,
but not a hog.
My sister wanted a cow--
moo moo, not bow wow.
I did not want a cat--
cuddle, and cute, and all that.
Oh how I wish
I could have a red and blue fish,
and lots of cookies in a dish.
The next morning as I awoke,

I went to the breakfast table

Mama came in
with a big grin.
She said, "After you eat
I have a treat.
Come outside
and we will go for a ride."
I crossed the floor
and went out the door.
We climbed in the car
and did not go very far.
We drove by a goat
chewing on an old coat
and a yellow cat
that was big and fat.
We stopped at a farm
with lots of country charm--
plenty of trees
and large bumble bees.
At the farm my mama
bought me a llama.
My llama was white
to my delight.
with marks of brown
all around.
As he rubbed the llama´s head,
The nice farmer said,
"The llama is a gentle mammal,
similar to the camel.
Be sure to shear
every other year.
From llama hair
you can make outerwear.
You can also make a rope and rug.
Give your mother a big hug."
I led my llama home
and let him roam.
He grazed on the grass and plants
and did not eat my pants.
He could carry a load
and not step on a toad.
I had a fun day.
I could run and play.
It is good luck
that I did not get a duck.
As I went to bed,
I happily said,
"Thank you, Mama
for the llama."
